[First Impressions] Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited (Xbox One)

I've been playing a lot of Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited. It's strange to play on Xbox One, which is what I'm currently doing-- it obviously works much better as a PC game, and not having a hot key for a map is driving me insane. And makes it hard to explore, I'm just saying.

I've naturally gone the route of a Dark Elf named Keah (again). In sort of vague story-telling terms, I've decided she's the ancestress of my Keah in Skyrim, and the family line was transported there due to the events in ESOTU.  My gamertag is grohiik07, so for the purposes of simplicity, I'm probably going to end up referring to my gamertag and character names together at some point.

The map has to be my biggest complaint about the game, though, since it's so very hard to navigate it on Xbox One. A mini-map would 100% help, even if they didn't want to "clutter" the UI. (I am very tired of their belief in a lack of clutter disrupting my ability to play their game.) Beyond that, the differences between ESO and Skyrim are very interesting. Making money in ESO is hard, a full-time job. Any gold drops or found gold are only in small amounts. You have to really have a profession to make any money. Or, you could do as a Nightblade sneak-thief does and steal everything that's not nailed down from houses... pockets... the market.... You can gather materials-- which themselves are only slightly more common than gold sometimes-- and craft them through an extensive and interesting crafting system to make money. Not being that committed, and with a character that can actually become invisible when necessary, I generally steal, and sometimes make potions. So do a lot of other people. The marketplaces are literally crawling with thieves, crouching behind the stalls, stealing whenever the stall merchant isn't looking their way. I've been playing for several hours and still only have a bit less than 3000 gold-- and it was hard won let me tell you. The cheapest horse is 14K unless you buy it in the Crown Store, which feels a bit like cheating. And I should probably start playing every night to make money if nothing else, if I want to get a horse.

Nightblade is an interesting class, especially when you combine the abilities with your choice of any kind of weapon. The Nightblade abilities give you some magic daggers for close-up moves, and pairing it with my love of ranged weaponry works perfectly. Health-draining moves alleviate the need for heavy armor. I can shadow walk across the map if I can get a target to lock onto, making it so I can shortcut the map in interesting ways at times.  Outlaws refuges in most cities make it so I can fence my goods (limit of 50 per day) and launder any items I want to use myself, making switching up my weaponry a breeze. The vast crafting system makes it easy to change the way your bow looks as well. I have a nice Nordic style bow with curved dragon heads on the ends, as well as a lovely Altmer-style bow covered in gold wing patterns.

One complaint, which I think might end up fixed by the Imperial City DLC, is the lack of a Thieves' Guild. The only guilds as yet present in the game are the Mages and the Fighters. But I'm willing to wait for the Imperial City and see if it provides me with either Thieves' or Assassins' Guilds. OR BOTH. I would also like more of the different countries unlocked, if possible. Currently you can only get into Eastmarch and the Rift in Skyrim, for example, and after running all the way across Morrowind at level 7it was very disappointing that I couldn't reach Markarth. And it was already irritating enough to be level 7 in an area where the enemies are level 42. (Irritating/terrifying/holy shit what.)

I'm going to leave this here for now like this, in the hopes of adding another post today if I get a chance to play after work. Screenshots to come when I'm no longer hidden behind my work computer's firewall!

PSP FAQ: All You Need To Know to Start Using a Playstation Portable

I have a confession to make.

I adore the PS Vita in all its shiny glory and potential. Yet the PSP was something I missed out on, due to lack of funds and a love of Pokémon over JRPGs. But then I started to hear whispers.

"Final Fantasy VII is in the Playstation Store," the whispers said. "You can get the old PS1 games for the PSP, all of the ones that cost 100+ nowadays."

"But the Vita is $300," I replied. "I can't afford it and the new computer that unfortunate circumstances resulted in my getting. The frequent bluescreening, the inability to play new games... I couldn't deal with my old computer, and that means no PS Vita until its price lowers."

"FFVII... FFVII...." The internet tempted me, but I prevailed.

And then came Black Friday, the blackest of all Fridays, the one where the lure of material things rises from the depths of Hell to seduce the weak.

I knew the PSP would have a major sale on this day, since it is on its way out the door now that the Vita is on its merry way. So after frequent, daily searching and scouring, I finally managed to land an extremely good deal on a PSP. It arrived in the mail, and I russled up a rare hard copy of Persona for it thanks to my friendly neighborhood GameStop, and then it occurred to me that Xmas is only a couple weeks away.

"I should probably wait," I muttered grumpily, and closed Media Go, Playstation's version of Steam, on my computer. I put the PSP materials in a box, and will be waiting until Xmas.

Along the way, I learned a few facts about both the Vita and the PSP that bear discussion, since it required lots of googling and different sources for me to figure them out. There was never one handy source for them, and that's my intention: to make one source for all the necessary information.

PS Vita Fact of the Day: UMD is not supported. This means that the PS Vita will not play your UMD movies or games. In other words, keep your PSP. Although the Playstation Store is good for game downloads, it's not comprehensive. Sony plans on offering a way to transfer UMD to their new format, but it will cost you. Have fun paying twice for your games, kids. Much better to keep your PSP.

Now, for a few PSP basics:

1) The PSP does not have a hard drive. For some reason, I was always under the distinct impression that it did, but this assumption was wrong. Like the PS2, PSP requires a memory card to save games. What the PSP uses is a Memory Stick Duo or Memory Stick Pro Duo. Both Sony and Sandisk make quality products for this. Do not get them in an actual store; they are far too expensive. The best deal is to get the Sandisk 4GB or 8GB from Amazon. If you have extra cash, go for a higher GB size, especially if you plan to download lots of games or store movies/tv shows.

2) The PSP does not come with a USB cable. To download anything from the Playstation Store, you will need a USB cable. The PSP must be attached to the computer while downloading and must have a Memory Stick Duo in at the time of download. The PSP uses a camera cable, with standard USB on one end and smaller USB on the other. I have a Sony e-reader USB cable; this works perfectly.

3) You will want headphones. Though the speakers are excellent, headphones are still the way to go. This is true of pretty much any gaming. Invest in a pair of Skullcandy Chops Buds for super portability and durability. All headphones will break eventually; Skullcandy's warranty is excellent and they will replace them, no questions asked, the moment you send them in.

4) The PSP is extremely prone to pick up fingerprints. I only handled mine briefly to put in the memory card and set it up, but it still bears the scars of my touch. Thus, you will probably want something like a silicone cover as well as a carrying case to keep the screen from scratching. Beware with the silicone cover that I linked-- although I don't mind the things warned in the reviews, you might, so read the reviews first. The crystal case or aluminum case might be more your thing. The PSP 3000 is also extremely light, so anything to give it more bulk is welcome.

And that concludes everything you need to know to get your PSP up and running! Enjoy your new portable gaming lifestyle.

I named the system Cherubim, to match my desktop Seraphim. What'd you name yours? :)

3DS News and Other Updates

For those who have not been paying attention recently (which may... or may not... have been me), the 3DS is now only $169, gone down from $229, if I'm remembering correctly. They think that the new price will attract me, when nothing short of a Pokémon game will make me buy it now that PS Vita exists. :)

Upcoming over the course of today is going to be a reference post of all of the games I have, with play-through notes, et cetera, to help me keep track of things. You might also notice that I stuck on the sides of the blog a "Currently Playing" list and an "Upcoming Games of AWESOME" list to further the organization process. So stay tuned for more organizational fun. ...What? I'm the only one that finds that fun? It can't be true!

Playstation Vita = love

Oh gawd I want the PS Vita so much now. Go. Go look up a game montage for it. Yes.

E3 Update

So, in case not everyone is living their life on the internet to watch every second of it, E3 is from June 7th-9th. The biggest things so far are the two console releases. Playstation Vita, the updated PSP, and Wii U, the updated Wii, are coming up pretty soon. I'm honestly more excited about Playstation Vita at this point. It'll get PS3 ports and looks pretty awesome. Also, it means that the PSP prices are going to go down soon, which means someone's favorite blogger is going to make a purchase sooner or later. (That's me!)

For the Wii U, the strangest part of the update is that you now have a 6 inch screen on your controller. The normal Wii controllers are still used as well. (BOO! Wii's controller sucks!) This personal screen lets you have your own viewpoint while gaming, and has a controller similar to PS3 and X-Box-- I.E. one that actually works. I have intense hate for Wii's controller, which isn't conducive to actual gaming.

The best video I saw on how this weird new controller is actually used:

The games that they're showcasing for the Wii U are aimed toward a more hardcore gamer crowd, which would be great. Except they're aiming specifically for a FPS gamer, and the controller seems to me as if it will be best used in an FPS situation. This means they're leaving out the hardcore RPG gamers. *sigh* Here is a showcase of Wii U's upcoming games. I'm going to have to wait to see what I think about Wii U. It seems so much like an overblown DS. But it could provide an interest situation in FPS. I just can't think of what an RPG gamer will get out of it.

The PS Vita looks pretty much like a PSP. The graphics are gorgeous, but other than that, it doesn't seem too much different than a PSP. It has 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity as well, and a touch screen. It seems very fingerprint-prone, from what I noticed in pictures.

Other than that, none of the games have thrilled me much so far. A new Halo is coming out for all you Halo lovers. Cheers on that. I really should probably play Halo sooner or later....

3DS: In-Store Test!

I had a chance to play with a 3DS today in Target. It's absolutely amazing. I was unsure about it initially, but my fears have been taken care of. I was right about in-store demonstrations being the way to go with this. Fortunately, there aren't any good games in it yet, but I'm probably going to have a conniption fit when the good games actually come out, since I can't afford it. But I WANT IT so much.

They've finally introduced the analog directional control to a handheld. The interface is smooth and clean. The 3D takes some time to get used to-- like looking at the glass in the window and looking through a window; you have to get used to looking through it rather than at it. You can turn the 3D on and off, and I think adjust it somewhat, though I didn't try that part.

If you are fortunate enough to have lots of money, buy this. Buy it right now, or buy it later, when there are actually decent games. Better yet, buy it for me. I accept donations and outright gifts. Thank you.

3DS Update

Great news about the 3DS! We have a list of the games launching with it:

Asphalt 3D (Ubisoft)
Bust-a-Move Universe (Square-Enix)
Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs 3D (Ubisoft)
LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars (LucasArts)
Madden NFL Football (EA)
NintenDogs and NintenCats (Nintendo)
Pilotwings Resort (Nintendo)
Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 3D (Konami)
Rayman 3D (Ubisoft)
Ridge Racer 3D (Namco Bandai)
Samurai Warriors: Chronicles (Tecmo Koei America)
The Sims 3 (EA)
Steel Diver (Nintendo)
Super Monkey Ball 3D (Sega)
Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition (Capcom)
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Shadow Wars (Ubisoft)

Also, we're supposed to be getting a Legend of Zelda, Starfox, and Kid Icarus pretty soon. The screenshots for Kid Icarus are amazing, but it's pretty much the only game I'm looking forward to in this list, and I still don't plan to shell out $40 on it. Rayman could be fun, but it's not really my kind of thing. Which is good, in the sense that I can't afford to buy a 3DS anyway, but still kind of disappointing. I can't wait for when Atlus gets in on all this-- in a game of hit or miss, they rarely miss.

Hardware Updates, Dragon Age, and Pokémon Event Reminder

Just as a reminder to everyone, Shiny Suicune is available in GameStops from now until February 6th (Sunday), so be there or be cubic! If you can, preorder your Pokémon Black or White from GameStop rather than Amazon-- Amazon is taking a lot of GameStop's business, and perhaps one day we might not have game stores anymore! HORRORS!

In related news, I have Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light now, which I got over Christmas. As soon as I have free time (LOL!) I will post a review of it (preview: it is awesome.) I will also be posting what will hopefully be daily updates on Dragon Age progress, though it might end up weekly. I haven't played it in forever, I.E. since my last post about it, but I'm in a computer-gaming mood, finally, so we're good to go.

The 3DS will be out relatively soon.... I'm interested in seeing in-store demonstrations, since so far I'm not impressed, simply because we have no clue what the graphics are going to be like. I don't think that can capture over videos, so in-store demonstrations are going to be the way to go on the 3DS. This probably means that a new version of the PSP will be out soon, so if you want to buy a PSP, I would hold off, since the price will probably drop dramatically pretty soon.
